What Is the PPD Skin Test?
The PPD skin test, also known as the Mantoux tuberculin skin test, is a common screening method used to determine if someone has been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). It is widely accepted for school, employment, and immigration purposes.
How It Works
A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is injected just beneath the skin of your forearm. After 48 to 72 hours, you’ll return so we can measure your body’s reaction. A raised, hard bump may indicate prior TB exposure and will be evaluated by our provider.
Who Needs a PPD Test?
- Healthcare workers and caregivers
- School and university students
- Immigration applicants
- Employees at high-risk facilities (prisons, shelters, etc.)
- Anyone with possible TB exposure
